Throughout the month of October, one Indianapolis man robbed the same 86-year-old victim more than two dozen times, and now faces 29 robbery charges that could land him in prison for the rest of his life.

Robert Amonette, 50, has been accused of tailing an elderly man through his neighborhood, then driving the victim to the bank and forcing him to withdraw money, according to court documents.

Police said Amonette and the victim knew each other.

On one occasion, investigators said Amonette brought a handgun, which is why he's been charged with one count armed robbery and 28 counts of robbery.

"Too often elderly citizens are targeted by criminals preying on their isolation," said Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry in a statement. "It is important that friends, family members and neighbors talk to elderly residents about their safety and to whom they are loaning, giving or paying money."

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Rick Hite also offered comments on the case, stating that the elderly are the cornerstone of our community and that IMPD needs help finding any additional victims that may have experienced a similar crime.
